Hello,
Here at Esco and Genesis we have a computer attched to a 'local' hub.
This hub is feed by another hub. I *think* the limit is 2 hubs between
any 2 computers.

So the answer is yes you can 'daisey-chain' a couple of hubs together.
About the straight/crossed 4 pair cable - I use the same cable for all
connections. To connect 1 hub to another I use a port that can be
crossed via a toggle switch on the hub. That way all my cables are
identical.

Hope this helps.
