If you want to make them unreadable without destroying them, you can use
a bulk tape eraser, available from Radio Shack and other fine audio
suppliers :-). These will make the data unavailable to a casual or even a
moderately sophisticated snoop.

If you want to destroy them, the easiest thing to do is look in the
yellow pages under Document Destruction. These guys have the equipment
necessary to turn the tapes into zillions of itsy bitsy pieces of
confetti, reels and all. (The equipment used resembles a food processor,
but much larger and somewhat noisier.)
