FWIW, I have used CONTIGVOL for over a year.  The job runs early each
weekday morning after the backup.  Empirically, I determined that three
times per volume seemed to compact things about as much as could be done
at any given time.

Don't know if this is a good thing and I'm sure third party packages
do a better job, but I, too, didn't have the money.
