How is the port configured? You suggest this new printer is replacing an
older laserjet. Could it be that it was a Laserjet II, configured as
termtype 19 or 22 or 26 - which require ststus checking support. The
laserjet 5 does NOT support this feature and needs to configured as
termtype 18 to work.

Incidentally, you CAN fix your network-connected printers' logical device
numbers beginning with 5.5.  Perhaps you don't really need to use the
serial card after all.
