At one site, we ran an RS422 cables underground below a road (in metal
pipes) for about 400 meters from one building to another. The cables
supported a printer at 19,200 and two terminal at 19,200. Only problem
was with lightning - ports had to be reset with sysdiag/termdsm/reset.

RS232 may have been different - but we never tried it.
