Winston Kriger asked about how I'm using Telnet or NS/VT so here goes:

Windows 3.1
Reflection 1 for Windows
Trumpet Winsock stack for PPP connection
ISDN to my ISP

I have been connecting recently to 3 different MPE/iX machines over the
internet this way. One is a 927, one is a 928 and the other a 969, all
running 5.5.

Reflection allows one to choose the connection method, and for some reason
I started with NS/VT on one machine and Telnet on another and the Telnet
connection was painfully slow - about like a 2400 baud modem, and NS/VT was
as fast as I would expect for an ISDN connection. When I switched to NS/VT
the connection was as good as the other. All my connections are now NS/VT.

Incidentally, the reason I'm using Trumpet instead of WRQ (apart from the
cost) is that WRQ is painfully slow connecting. I had an evaluation copy
that took 29 seconds to connect. WRQ sent me an upgrade that cut it down
to 19 seconds. Trumpet does the same in about 4! One of the advantages of
using ISDN is the quick connection - I have my inactivity timer set for 5
minutes and for some time I had it set at 1 minute - I may eventually
compromise at around 2-3 minutes. This is unacceptable with a connection
time of 19 seconds.
