Hi Roy and Al,
There are following issues coming out of this discussion:
1) Why should one take backup in preferably standalone environment?
Ans: To the best of my knowledge, this problem will be there with all
the multitasking operating systems (Find out about NT).
(Single tasking OS will not face problem because backup is the
only job running!!)
If you do not, than all open files' backup MAY NOT BE reliable.
So, the price you pay (by not having the standalone environment)
is known to you.
In your case, if there are really no users at night (and they
haven't kept open their files), back up is reliable from user's
point of view.
If applications are running (fax servises etc.) at night, you
know that those files are open and you also will have them,
from where you loaded. (You may back up them once in a
while , if customized applications.)
However there always are smart solutions to decrease the
downtime of the system.
HP-3000 has one! Turbo store true online is the name of the
product. You can get the information on this from HP reponse
centres.
Check with your system , there must be an option called
online for store command.
2) Does HP has plans to fix this? Do they consider this as problem?
Well, it is answered above.
3) You learn somethings hard way!
You must know the soft ways. For example HP's Response centre
could have provided you the information on NetWare/iX and
MPE Back up strategies.
4) All servises are to be started at PCs (manually) !
You can try writing smart batch files!
5) Restore?
NWRESTORE is the utility and I guess it is best done , when
NetWare is not up.
There can be smart ways to workaround this using nwixcopy!
PLEASE USE THE HP SUPPORT CHANNEL for more information.
(You anyway will get some more in this thread ;-) ).
Thanks.
