You are describing the standard behaviour of printer type 26, defined in
TT26.PUB.SYS (Do not modify this file!) You can configure the DTC port
as type 22 (defined in TT22.PUB.SYS) and you will only get one message
while the spooler will stay up. If you want to configure something
in-between, use TTUTIL to modify 'Printer Control' in a copy of TT26
(say TT26X).
Then define TT26X as the printer type file name on screen 'DTS Printer
Profile' of NMMGR.
** OOPS **: I just noticed the LJ3si - do you have a special serial
interface supporting 'status check'? If not, you must be using a
modified term type 18 file already. See how you go!
