I also have had this problem - at least others receiving mail on this
list server have complained to me that they receive the WINMAIL.DAT. We
are not on Win/95 nor Exchange. We use OpenMail with MS Mail clinets on
WIN 3.11. I cannot find any reference to RTF in my client setup. Any
clues here?

The attachment contains the RTF (Rich Text Format) of the message, which
is generated within the Windows 95 "Inbox" (a/k/a Exchange Client or
Windows Messaging).  This is sent if the addressee has its property "Send
text in RTF" set on.  If not set on, this file is not attached.

Basically, if both "readers" are using the Win95 Inbox (Exchange Client or
Windows Messaging), then they see the RTF by default, which allows colors,
fonts and the variations of each.  Most internet mail clients, however, do
not have this capability (yet?).  The only ones I know of which have this
now is Exchange Client, Windows Messaging, and the new mail client
imbedded into the new AOL client software.
