maybe someone with GNU C++ experience would like to pick up
the source and try if if also can be compiled using the GNU
environment...

I'm still using the HP C/iX compiler (c89) but only because
I have at least a *little* experience with that one and thus
don't want to add another "unknown variable" to the porting
process...

So, GNU-ers, feel free to jump in. I'm curious about it.
