Despite what you might have heard, vt3k is *not* a terminal emulator.

Instead, think of it as a replacement for a serial cable between your
terminal / terminal emulator / hpterm and your HP3000.

If you are using an X-Windows system (HP9000 & graphics, or an X-terminal
connected to an HP9000), you'd typically use vt3k as follows:

(assume the HP3000 you want to logon to is called "fred")

   1) logon to the HP9000
   2) start an hpterm window (not xterm!) (maybe a dtterm window will work)
   3) in that window, type: vt3k fred

Note that you *already* have the terminal emulator running...the hpterm
window. What you're doing is replacing the logical "connection" between
hpterm and the 9000 with a logical "connection" between hpterm and the
   HP3000 named "fred".

In effect, think of vt3k like a sort of "rlogin"...just like rlogin is
*not* a terminal emulator, so too vt3k is *not* a terminal emulator.
However, rlogin is generally used from a terminal (or emulator), so too
vt3k is generally used from a terminal (or emulator).

Here's a portion of the HP-UX 10.10 man page for vt3k:

 NAME
vt3k - virtual terminal facility from HP-UX (HP 9000) to MPE (HP 3000)

 SYNOPSIS
      vt3k [-a|-I input_file] [-l[i] [o] [-f logfile] [-t]
      [-B num_of_breaks] [-T break_timer] hostname|IP_address

 DESCRIPTION
vt3k allows you to log in (via LAN) from HP-UX to MPE V or MPE/iX.
Invoking vt3k from HP-UX establishes a connection to an HP 3000
running NS Virtual Terminal Services. Upon successful connection, you
receive an MPE logon prompt. When you log off the MPE system, the
connection is automatically terminated and you are returned to HP-UX.

    Requirements Checklist
VT3K/9000 requires one of the following configurations:

+ HP 2392 or HP 700/92 terminal connected via RS-232 to an HP
9000 Series 800 (connected via LAN to an HP 3000).

+ HP 9000 Series 700 or 800 workstation running hpterm.
hpterm offers HP Block-Mode terminal emulation when using
                X-Windows on a Series 700 workstation.

      VT3K/9000 requires the following:

+ The HP 3000 must be running at least MPE V release 30, or
MPE/iX 4.0 and be equipped with NS Services and NS LAN Link
                products.

+ The HP 3000 must be configured in either the domain name
server or /etc/hosts file. vt3k can cross gateways as long
as routing information is available for systems not on the
                local network.

+ The HP 3000 and HP 9000 HP-UX must be configured for
                Ethernet.

+ The target HP 3000 must be running the VTA Virtual Terminal
                Service.
