This is just a minor 5.5 annoyance:

It seems that using $OLDPASS as an environment
file doesn't work in MPE/iX 5.5 anymore.

We have a bunch of jobs that build a printer
environment file on the fly using EDITOR or
QEDIT, then keep the file to $NEWPASS, then
use $OLDPASS as the environment file:

        :
      /keep $newpass
      /exit
      !file envfile=$oldpass
      !file output;dev=lp;env=*envfile
        :

This no longer seems to work, but KEEPing to
a temporary file does work, so that's what
we're doing instead..

  (I'm not really looking for answers here, but
   posting this in case anybody else is doing
   environment files the same way..)
