Gregory

Thanks for the offer of help. We need all the help we can get :)

Jens and I have successfully compiled the SAMBA source to HPUX 8,9 and
10, LINUX, and we even got a version to run on one of those HP SureSTore
Optical LAN Juke Boxes (80GB) which run a version of Novel's terrible
Unixware.

The scoop of getting it to run on the SureStore juke box saved the
client thousands of $'s in NFS licenses, since the SMB/CIFS client is
"free" with every copy of Windows/WindowsNT. Of course, by doing so, we
probably invalidated the warranty on the Juke Box, but hell, the gain
was too great to ignore. (We also tried to upgrade the 486/sx33 chip and
memory on the blackbox PC that bolts onto the side and runs the juke
box. Memory helped a lot, but a DX266 chip caused timing problems
between the PC and Robotics - imagine a device that DEPENDS on a slow
processor!) Imagine how "cheap" and effective those SureStore Juke Boxes
could have been if the labs had used LINUX and SAMBA instead of
UnixWare!

SAMBA forms an extremely reliable and important part of our client
solutions. We use it extensively in a mixed UNIX, NT, Windows
environment. We'd love to bring MPE/iX into the SAMBA/CIFS fold, and
SAMBA seems the logical way to do this.

We had a stab at compiling the sources on the HP3000 using the GNU
compiler, but without the Posix development kit and lots and lots of
knowledge, we simply ran out of ideas and time.

Point your web browser at http://lake.canberra.edu.au/pub/samba/ and
read on. It even runs on DEC's VMS, for goodness sake! Download the
source code and if you have time, try to get the client side running.
Talk to Lars. He's on to it as well. We'll give it another try when we
get 5.5 up.

Please keep in touch.

IMHO it would be an extremely important step for the HP3000 to be able
to present itself as the world's biggest and most reliable CIFS server.

Neil
