The ping described by Mike Hornsby stops my 5.5 crash and burn system
in a heartbeat.
This certainly should be a high priority fix, is anyone in the networking
lab listening to this? Are their any work arounds for this problem until a
patch can be developed?
Jim

Howdy,
I have not been receiving my digest but I have been getting e-mail.
I don't get it but....I checked the 3000-l archives and see a number
of postings regarding the ping and crash thread. Here's what I know:
HP is aware of the problem, see SR 4701338830, and have developed a
patch for the 5.0 OS. It is awaiting lab approval for release. Some
people have pinged their 3000 and not experienced any problem. Hmmm..
must be on MPE/iX 5.0 or 5.5 (the info I got from HPRC indicates 4.0
also but I have no way to verify that). Windows95 and some versions
of NT. Now here I think is the problem.
It requires a specific syntax in ping to crash the system, and I
am personally reluctant to publish it. It's on the Internet but
as it gives the expicit syntax I'm not real high on publishing the
URL. That info was on the list just before I got disconnected (or
disconnected myself :(). Just go digging you'll find it.
As to firewalls...we changed ours to refuse any ping to the 3K from
outside the corporation. Guess it does some good, but with over
140,000 employees it's a pretty poor solution IMHO. Maybe I'm
wrong. With that many people inside the firewall maybe there are
no "disgruntled" employees. After all - this ain't the post office.
I'm quite willing to follow this thread, however 'til I can get my
messaging straightend out, please e-mail or call me directly.
Good luck,
James Trudeau
