Sounds to me like you'll have to do something to spoof the modem.

I was looking on this problem many years ago (MPE 4 ) an I fond out that
this was the design
of the spooler over dialup modems. It must disconnect sometime and they
desided that it shall go down
for every file printed. As it was so in MPE 2-3-4-5 it was the same in
XL/iX.
I dont know any good way to configure it to work different as long as you
want to use a dialup sollution.
