We had a Regional Users Group (Baltimore/Washington)
board meeting yesterday. I gave my report on the
HPWorld Conference and mentioned that the hottest topic
was the future of the HP 3000. A board member said
maybe we should send a letter to HP (Lew Platt?).
Somebody else said what about getting all our members
to send a letter. My fervid imagination (for those
interested, no alcohol was served) went into overdrive.
What about a letter from all the RUGs? SIGS? 3000-L?
Etc. Etc.?

Does such a petition or series of letters sound like a
good idea? I have the following questions (my comments
are included):

1. Will it do any good? (Of course, it can't hurt,
but is it worth the effort?)

2. Should it be organized or should we just solicit
users to send letters? (If it is organized, we will
get more people involved, but it will not appear as
"spontaneous".)

3. To whom should we address it? (Lew Platt - CC to
all those HP bigwigs at HPWorld, who either made
commitments or talked of "lack of resources".)

4. Should the letter be "nice-nice" or should it be
more adversarial - mentioning for, example, what I
heard over and ever again _ "if HP abandons me by
abandoning the 3000, HP goes to the bottom of the list
when it comes to choosing a replacement.

So, what do you think? E-mail me privately or go
public.

Regards,
