You might look into the 'pbmplus' suite of graphics utilities available on
many unix platforms. They do xbm/bmp/gif/jpeg/etc conversions and are
designed to be used as "pipes" between some specific image source format
and a viewer (X, Motif, whatever). Since they are mostly juggling bits and
not doing any hard-core system internals they should port to posix without
too much trouble [you're on your own for a viewer though :-) ]
