I used PM on many occasions previously, its just that
I wasn't expecting to "have" to under this circumstance.
I couldn't find any documentation on LaserRom to support
its usage here (not real surprising), and considering
that it appears to require PM not because of a 'technical'
reason, but only due to a half-hearted attempt at compatibility
with the Unix world, I'm a little dismayed.

In any event, now I know better.
(take two steps, stumble backwards one, take two steps,...)

Priv mode is (sort of) the MPE equiv. to executing as "root user",
only it's *much* safer. Notice that you put "GETPRIVMODE" and
"GETUSERMODE" before and after the call that needs it, rather than
giving the entire program "root user" access? Bugs in other parts of
your code are unlikely to cause system failures, or open up security
holes by mistake.
