However, when I do something that would cause a VPLUS screen to come
up, it loses. How can I get them working? I am using an Xterm on the
Unix side, which is essentially a VT100/VT102, and I am accessing the
serial port with a command called 'tip'.
 
You cannot use a VT100 or a look-alike with VPlus..  VPlus requires either an HP
terminal or a terminal emulator, e. g. Reflections that supports VPlus.  You might
try WRQ (makers of Reflection) to see if they have an emulator that works on
UNIX.
