Terry:
Make sure the modem is operating in "dumb" mode, that is, it is not
sending messages line "RING", "CONNECT", etc. to the HP 3000.  Depending
upon the modem, you may have to do some or all of the following:
 
   *  Disable command echo
   *  Disable result codes
   *  Flip a dip switch for "dumb" mode.
 
It has been a while since I've used a Courier modem, so I don't remember
the specifics of that modem.  The modems we have here like for us to set
the options:
 
AT E0    (disable command echo)
AT Q1    (disable result codes)
AT \V0   (disable protocol result codes)
 
And if that were not enough, there is a jumper within the modem we have
to change (hey, what can I say, they were the lowest bidder so the US
government bought them).
