Kyle,
In order to approach this question, one needs to know the environment
you will be running.
1) Will you be purchasing only 3rd party packages or writing your own?
2) Will you be converting existing 3000 based apps to run on the 9000?
3) Will you be running both environments for a significant period of time?
<<NOT REALLY, BUT KIND OF A PLUG ALERT>>
I have had to live in the SCO Unix and HP3000 world for some time. Due
to client pressure and preferences, 3 years ago I begain developing new
applications in Micro Focus Cobol (as well as continuing to develop in
HP COBOL VPLUS TURBO IMAGE.) The MF development environment is now
available on the PC, HP 3000, HP 9000, IB(yuck)M, and many many other
HW/OS platforms. If you follow some reasonable guidelines, apps developed under
their development environments are TOTALLY portable between platforms and
operating systems. This environment supports VPLUS - type of user interface,
as well as a PM/WINDOWS API if you are in a Client Server environment.
It also supports calls to your favorite DB environment, be it brand
x SQL, IMAGESQL, KSAM, or whatever. There are lots of options.
THEREFORE
IF you are going to write your own new systems
OR buy third party products,
AND move across platforms
THEN those developed under MF Cobol, whether by a third party
or your own staff, tend to have long lasting value,
provide security and comfort to the user community, and show
a handsome ROI to the bean counters in finance.
