Only an anecdote...
 
A few years ago, we told one of our clients to expect to need 3 times
the CPU horsepower, and 3 times the disk when moving from
MPE & IMAGE to Unix & any RDBMS.  After the move was done, he came back
annoyed, complaining that we should have told him it was 5 times the CPU
and 5 times the storage.
 
And that didn't in any way include the significant increase in support cost:
system management, operations, programming.
