The 1996 NOWRUG (NorthWest Regional Users Group) Conference - Ticket to
the Future - will be held on Tuesday, May 7th at the Meydenbauer
Center in Bellevue, WA. First session starts at 8:00, last session
ends at 5:00. There will also be a vendor show. This year we
feature 4 tracks: Unix, MPE/iX, potpourri, and vendor related.
The cost for this year's conference is $50 and that includes lunch.
Following is a list of abstracts, a registration form and directions.

**** An Overview of MPE/iX 5.5 - Kriss Rant, Product Manager, HP

MPE/iX is the operating system used on all HP 3000 Series 900 business
computers. MPE/iX Release 5.5 scheduled to begin shipping in mid-1996
contains a variety of enhancements that enable HP 3000 customers to
achieve higher levels of performance and availability traditionally
associated with the HP 3000, and at the same time take advantage of new
technologies that improve coexistence with UNIX.

In Release 5.5, MPE/iX has been enhanced in 6 key areas:

   - High Availability
   - Platform Evolution
   - Patch Process
   - Coexistence with UNIX
   - Desktop Integration
- Application Evolution

The objective of this presentation is to give customers an overview of
these new enhancements to assist them in planning their future IT strategies.

This presentation is primarily targeted to MIS Managers, systems
managers, and programmers of MPE/iX systems.

**** Single Signon Integration - Joe Kovara, CyberSafe Corporation

Single Signon (SSO) can make it possible for a user to log in to and gain
access to many network resources using one user ID and password.
Considering the proliferation of IDs and password pairs that users' are
required to remember so they can gain access to the resources for their
jobs, SSO can offer secure network-wide authentication, rather than
keeping track of all those passwords and having those passwords exposed
on the network for eavesdroppers.

This talk will compare and contrast between the different SSO
implementations: scripting, agents, and brokers. How do these
implementations work? Is one implementation genuinely better than
another? If so, which one/ones and why?

**** AWK by Example - David Totsch, Pepsi Cola

An attractive and powerful feature of HP-UX is its strong set of data
manipulation tools such as grep, sed, shell scripts and awk. One of
the most powerful of these tools is also one of the least used. This
session has been designed to quickly introduce users, programmers and
system administrators to the abilities of the awk programming language.
This tool will be presented in the way a technical user usually learns
-- by looking at how someone already using the tool is working with it
and by trying progressively more complex implementations. By adding
awk to their skill set, anyone writing shell scripts, parsing data,
converting programs, writing prototype systems and creating formatted
reports can take further advantage of the productivity and
functionality gains that HP-UX has to offer.

**** How to get hooked up to the Internet, Deborah Finck and Kirk
Olson, Cerius Technology Group

Many people haven t taken the Internet plunge. This presentation will
cover the basics of getting a MS Windows or Windows 95 client hooked
up to a dial-up Internet Service Provider.

The talk will cover:

Winsock TCP/IP set-up.
Installing and configuring a Web Browser.
Setting up E-Mail and Newsreaders.
Other nifty utilities.

**** Client/Server Middleware - Lee Tsai, LeeTech Software

Mr. Tsai will reveal the internals of LeeTech's Client/Server
Middleware architecture on PC, HP/3000, HP/9000, and IBM networking
environments. These tools have been used by major Fortune 500
companies in missions critical applications. This session will address
all of the fundamental requirements for building a Client/Server
application from a practical standpoint. Lee will address reworking
both legacy and SQL relational database systems.

You will benefit by understanding the in-depth working of a
Client/Server model. The case study will give practical analysis of
your return on investment by moving into a Client/Server architecture.
The factors addressed will include business needs, end user convenience
vs. Programmer productivity, application implementation effort,
training, operations, and ultimate system performance.

The case study will be a PC Windows 3.1 Visual Basic client connected
to an HP3000 COBOL IMAGE legacy system as a server.

**** An Introduction to Java - Brian Maso

Brian Maso, the co-author of the soon to be released Waite Group Press
"Java API SuperBible" will give an introduction to the Java environment.

**** The Kerberos Security Model; What is it? Why is it really secure?
- Joe Kovara, CyberSafe Corporation

This topic provides an introduction to the Kerberos protocol and its
security benefits. Kerberos is the mythical three-headed dog that
guards the gates of Hades. He isn't there to keep people in; he's there
to keep people out, to protect the wealth within.

Developed as part of MIT's Project Athena, Kerberos provides secure
authentication services in a network and is the only fully-functional
Internet standard security protocol. It is used by DCE and many other
security products. This talk answers the following questions: How does
the protocol really work? Why is it really secure? What does this mean
for an organization that chooses to adopt Kerberos as its
authentication security service on the network? Hear how Kerberos can
make it possible for you to rest easier that your network is protected
from within.

**** Internet Services Security- Chris Rice, Communications Technology Center

Learn security related issues regarding such Internet services as the
WWW, Telnet, FTP, sendmail and POP. PGP and PEM will also be explained.

**** Microsoft Exchange - Kathryn Edens, Microsoft Corporation

Kathryn Edens, Senior Messaging Engineer from Microsoft PacWest Office,
will present an overview of the NEW Microsoft Exchange Server, the next
generation of messaging from Microsoft. The overview will include both
presentation and demonstration.

Microsoft Exchange Server is the e-mail server with integrated groupware
that makes it easier to communicate. It combines electronic mail, group
scheduling, electronic forms, and groupware applications on a single
platform that you can manage with a centralized administration program.

It is the most reliable way to send e-mail and access groupware
applications over the Internet or any other network.

**** Open Storage Solutions - New Strategies for Success - EMC

The impact of deploying mission critical applications and
datawarehouses in open systems has elevated the critical role storage
plays in any successful implementation. With storage representing 50%
or more of any large scale solution , understanding and having a
storage architecture is just as critical as understanding and having a
system architecture. During this session, EMC (the world s leading
independent storage provider) will discuss some of the challenges
enterprises face and what is being done to address these challenges.

Storage is no longer just disks, storage systems are now highly
intelligent with as much or more processing power than the systems to
which they are attached. Storage is now a critical part of the
decision process and is looked upon to make money, increase
performance, increase availability, and extend the total useful life of
a system s investment.

**** SQL Jump Start: IMAGE/SQL: Issues & Answers Concerning SQL
Tables - Doug Myers, Database Engineer - Hewlett Packard

This presentation includes a 105 pages booklet. If you plan on
attending this session, please indicate it on the registration form so
that enough booklets are shipped.

If you are a TurboIMAGE programmer, you are already familiar with the
key concepts needed to develop an application that calls TurboIMAGE
intrinsics. The goal of this tutorial is to make you familiar with
similar concepts for the SQL part of IMAGE/SQL, so that you have the
ability to develop an SQL application that accesses information stored
in either TurboIMAGE data sets or SQL tables. Topics included:

Overview
How are TurboIMAGE/XL,ALLBASE/SQL and IMAGE/SQL related?
Why should I care about SQL tables?
What SQL terminology should I know?
SQL Storage & Security:
        Review physical storage for TurboIMAGE
Explain how SQL tables are physically stored
Explain how SQL security is implemented
Trouble-Shooting with SQLMON
        What is it?
        Where is it?
        How do I use it?
SQL Transactions and Locking
SQL Transactions (starting, ending, timeouts, etc.)
How are deadlocks resolved by ALLBASE/SQL?
SQL DBECon file parameters associated with locking
How does the SQL optimizer affect locking?
        What is an SQL cursor?
And everything else you wanted to know about SQL locking!

**** Regular Expressions - David Totsch, Pepsi Cola

One of the most powerful features of the HP-UX operating system is its
ability to perform complex string manipulations through such commands
as 'grep', 'sed', and 'awk'. These string manipulation commands are
strengthened by their ability to query not only on strings and
substrings, but also by special search patterns otherwise know as
Regular Expressions. David will present the syntax of regular
expressions through examples so that you can quickly reap the benefits
of this useful UNIX feature.

**** MPE/iX Coexistence with UNIX, Kriss Rant, Product Manager - HP

As companies try to increase their competitiveness, many look to add
incremental solutions to their HP 3000 or other computing platforms.

Recoginizing that companies very likely use more than one computing
environment, Hewlett-Packard, working with its channel partners, has
made tremendous strides over the past year to integrate the HP 3000
with other computing platforms, specifically UNIX, in the areas of
interoperability, application development, and system management.

The objective of this presentation is to give customers an overview
of Hewlett-Packard's HP 3000 coexistence offering. The presentation
will be supplemented with various video clips from George Stachnik's
TCU broadcasts.

This presentation is primarily targeted to MIS Managers, systems
managers, and programmers of MPE/iX systems.

**** Accessing your HP3000 data via the WWW using Autobahn - Kurt
Tueffert, Hawthorne Computer Center

Speedware s Autobahn gives you the ability to access your HP3000 data
via the WWW using a proxy server. Kurt will discuss accessing data
from the WWW using the Autobahn product.
