<<I'm running  MPE-iX 4.0 on an HP3000/917.  The  IODFAULT.PUB.SYS  file
does not list the "HP7980S" drive. Is this drive supported at 4.0
with a patch, if so does anyone know the patch number?>>

If you don't find a patch, you can just splice the following lines into
the file:
  {************** 1/2" Reel SCSI ******************}
HP7980S TAPE    24 5  0128   SCSI_TAPE2_DM LOGICAL_DEVICE_MANAGER 0010  &
JOB+DATA+INPUT+OUTPUT+AUTOREPLY NONE TAPE 0 DA 0 FALSE FALSE
HP7980SX TAPE    24 5  0128   SCSI_TAPE2_DM LOGICAL_DEVICE_MANAGER 0010
 &
JOB+DATA+INPUT+OUTPUT+AUTOREPLY NONE TAPE 0 DA 0 FALSE FALSE

In our version (5.0 PowerPatch 4) they appear just after the section:
  {******* COMP3480 Device ID is valid for all 3480 tape devices
*******}
COMP3480 TAPE    24 8  0128   SCSI_TAPE2_DM LOGICAL_DEVICE_MANAGER 0010
 &
JOB+DATA+INPUT+OUTPUT+AUTOREPLY NONE TAPE 0 DA 0 FALSE FALSE
