This, to my way of thinking, is the big question facing the future of MPE.
It must be ported (evolved?) to 64bit processor environments and it must
support the new long-instruction word compilers.

Since history tends to repeat itself, the place to start is to leverage
the current HP project to deliver a 64bit Unix and share device drivers.
HP seems more interested than ever in delivering an MPE quality Unix!
