Just a follow up to my prior comments:

There is a utility called "SLTCOPY" that comes with CDROM updates. Its
available to those of you who now get their OS updates on CD-ROM (CD-ROM
updates are cheaper and more flexible than tapes). It's designed to
duplicate the CSLTs made during the process so they can be used on
other machines and remote sites. It can copy to disk or directly to
another tape drive.

I tested it quickly and found that it does recognize a plain MPE/ix
TurboStore tape format.

This may be yet another reason to try CD-ROM updates.
