 You are 100% correct Bruce.  This approach by vendors has, in my
opinion, hurt the HP3000 community.  The popularity of Unix is, in no
small part, due to the mound of free software and the "Internet Culture"
of sharing ideas, problems, and experiences.  It's nice to see forums
such as this making an effort to "open" the 3000.
 
 In this particular situation the information you need is contained in
the HP manuals that come with most (all?) of the HP Laser printers.  I
know I have read the III and 4 series manuals and it's in there.  If I
had them on hand I'd post references to the relevant sections.
 
 To be diplomatic... Martin did provide a plug alert and you can hardly
convict him for attempting to make a buck.
