Chris,
This isn't that isolated ... we used to experience this problem
regularly when patching Release 3.x. 4.0 seemed not to have this
problem. 5.0 ? ... well, your message speaks volumes!

Subject: BEWARE Express 3 Powerpatch...

I think someone commented on this problem with one of the MPE/V platform
releases, but having just gone through a rather botched install of Express 3
on MPE/iX I thought I'd share this in hopes of saving others from hitting the
same time-wasting problem...
Halfway through the patch installation, as the patch process is modifying the
system SL (SL.PUB.SYS) it ran out of space in the SL (available space
exhausted)... process dies. We're now stuck with a half-patched SL.PUB.SYS.
To proceed, we got instructions (which needed some revision!) from the HPRC
on how to expand the SL, which involved copying the SL in segmenter then
running OCT on it.. the OCT process took well over an hour. Anyway, NOW we
have to make a new temporary CSLT, shut down and reboot (UPDATE) from it
just to get back to the point where the patch process died so we can proceed.
*sigh*
Maybe this is an isolated incident, but a quick look at our original SL
file (hindsight is 20/20) tells me that there might be problems adding
stuff to it:
FILENAME CODE ------------LOGICAL RECORD----------- ----SPACE----
SIZE TYP EOF LIMIT R/B SECTORS #X MX
SL * SL 128W FB 12080 12186 1 12192 34 *
^^^^^ ^^^^^
Obviously not much room left there. I don't know what the requirement is
for space (and maybe the :LISTF isn't representative of the actual space
available in the SL...).
Silly me. When I called in for the powerpatch, I specifically asked if there
were any problems with these as I thought I'd remembered someone on the list
mentioning it. The engineer said he'd check into it; then called back to say
no. The next morning I received the powerpatch and a couple hours later a
linkedit patch (which we installed first thinking that might save us).
