I looked up the HLIO (High-Level I/O) and LLIO (Low-Level I/O) translation
tables that map NM hpe_status values to the ATTACHIO equivalent.  Only two
errors are mapped to %53, llio_pass_eov_abort and llio_device_offline.
I have no idea what the first one means.  The second one could relate to
Stan's notes, i.e. the device isn't allocated.  I suspect this can either
mean that there's a path through your code that does I/O without first doing
an ATTACHIO device open, or that the device has disconnected between the
device open and your attempt to do an I/O.
