There are a number of reasons that can cause this type of problem.
One of the best diagnostics and also the simpliest is the
LINKCONTROL command.
 
issue ---> linkcontrol @;status=reset (to reset the stats)
 
I would recommend issuing this command daily at the start of
the day.  When the problem occurs
 
issue ---> linkcontrol @;status=d (for diagnostic report)
 
the command will provide you statistics on what the HP3000
has observed on the network.  Key things to look for are
excessive collisions and heartbeat losses.  If no problems
are observed then the problem may be external to the 3000.
