We have been performing nightly production backups to a single
C1521B DDS drive for about 18 months now. Last Sunday we
increased several datasets that finally put the backup over the
edge and asked for another tape. We are using Unison's Roadrunner
product with max compression which works great but now the
problem has become obvious. I am looking for an alternative
without stripping more data out of the backup job.

Can anyone using DAT Autoloaders comment on what hardware they
are using now and is working well in your shop? My window of
opportunity (spending money) is now! I would like to stick with
HP equipment but I don't believe they have an autoloader
available for sale to customers, at least available for the 3k.

I second DAT drive may be cheaper than an autoloader. Roadrunner will
permit using multiple drives so that the second, third, etc. will kick in
when the first is done. Of course if you foresee continually adding data so
that every so often you will have to go to the well for another DAT drive,
well perhaps take the hit on an autoloader. I think I've seen adds for
Herstal and IEM???

We use the SCSI 120 meter DAT DDS drive so that eliminates some pressure for
a second cartridge.

Please call me if you want to chat.
