3000 NewsWire Update
HP announces system ship date for new RISC processor

The last generation of PA-RISC chips before the Intel/HP collaboration
matures now have a ship date and performance promises. The latest HP 3000
systems introduced this week -- Series 969 and 996 -- will have board
upgrade capability to these new PA-8000 processors. HP 3000s introduced
prior to the Corporate Business Systems and the Kittyhawk-class systems
won't board upgrade, because they use a different backplane.

Unlike its just-announced PA-7300LC, a low cost, low-end chip, HP has
pointed all along to the PA-8000 having a place in the future of the HP
3000. The timing of these processor releases and which one is "the latest"
can be confusing. The PA-8000 won't be the latest processor to ship from
HP, even though it's got the highest number. The 7300LC, destined to
compete with multimedia workstation chips from Intel, Sun and others, is
expected to run in HP systems by the third quarter of 1996.

HP said the first HP systems to carry the PA-8000 will ship in the
first quarter of 1996. HP didn't say which systems will carry the chip,
but it's likely the HP 3000s won't be on that first-quarter list, since
the 7150-based Series 996s will only be first shipping around the same
time. HP expect the systems which run with the 8000 to be twice as fast as
predecessors.
