My client has a 959/400 with 12 x 2GB HPC2490WD disks (these are the new
Fast Wide SCSI disks) configured as system disks.

The system was upgraded from an HP980/100, and all the peripherals were
taken over, but the disks from the 980 (8 x 2GB HPC2490AM's and 5 X 2GB
HPC3010M1's) were configured as private volumes on 959 at the insistence
of the local SE.

The client had recently lost four of the disks on the 980, but thankfully
was able to recover all data, so only time (and money) was lost.

I recently read a thread here that other people were experiencing disk
problems with some 2GB disks, and wonder if they were all the same as my
clients? (HPC2490AM's).

If so, and if HP is aware that there are problems with these models,
surely they should be taking proactive measures, and not just suggesting
that they be used as "private volumes"?

I guess the implication is that if they are used as private volumes, then
the data on them is probably not so important, and you can easily stand
the loss of a disk or two every few months!

I'd love to hear if HP have a) acknowledged the problem, and b) worked up
a strategy to cope with it.

Incidently, the 959/400 is an absolute marvel, and eats up workload at a
blistering pace - reaffirming my belief that the HP3000 is the finest
multipurpose mid range computer on earth.

Does anyone know if an HP-IB 7978A tape drive can be changed to SCSI to
enable attachment to the 959/400?

All help appreciated.
