Last week I solicited comments from the SigSysMan list about security
concerns (some more would be appreciated). Programs like lzw and quark and
others have a security risk associated with their use since they can access
privileged files and copy them to non-privileged files. A hacker (within a
company) could possibly use this as a means to examine database passwords,
or view the raw data. Then again, a STORE tape left lying about could be
even more dangerous! Still, while these programs can provide immense
benefit, a cautious man will try to minimize the risks by protecting these
programs from unauthorised use.
