Network printing means lots of different things to different people. Here's
what's available, and what's coming.
Today - if you are using a Novell LAN, your Netware client PCs can print to any
networked printer. If your are using the Netware product for the HP 3000,
(i.e., if your 3000 is acting as a Netware Server), then your MPE spooled
printers can also be accessed by Netware clients as if they were networked
printers.
On the 5.5 release (currently scheduled to ship in the 1st half of '96),
the HP 3000 version of Netware will be enhanced so that the MPE spooler can
print to networked printers (such as LaserJets connected via a JetDirect Card).
This will use the IPX/SPX transport mechanism which is a part of the Netware
Product.
Shortly after the 5.5 release ships there will be a release which
will allow the MPE spooler to print to networked printers using the (bundled)
TCP/IP transport mechanism, removing the need for Netware. It's worth nothing
that, although this will be sufficient for many customers, it will not replace
the 3rd party product offerings that are available for the 3000 today. The
third party products offer functionality in many areas above and beyond what
will be bundled with MPE. For example, if your networked printer is receiving
printed output from two or more computers, a robust third party solution would
allow you to prioritize those reports and print them in a specified order,
regardless of which machine(s) the reports came from. The MPE bundled network
printing solution will prioritize the reports it "knows about" (i.e., those
coming from the 3000), but it won't prioritize a queue of reports coming from
multiple machines.
