We had similar problems with a DeskJet 500C (which finally developed a
problem feeding paper which led us to send it in). HP paid for the shipping
of the defective unit, and repaired it and sent it back to us (no charge)
within a week. No more problems! (they - the deskjets - do have a nice long
warranty period, which ours still fell under, though just barely.)
