I know that this is the HP3000 list but I also know that there is a lot of
great knowledge on this list so I thought I would start here.

On my HP Vectra 486/66N using MS-DOS 6.22, I have been using the
DEFRAG utility that comes with DOS and have been experiencing
random corruption problems with EXEs and DLLs as well as other
files. I believe that these problems are directly related to the DEFRAG
utility but MS doesn't believe that there is any problem with DEFRAG.

There advice is to find someone who is using DOS 6.22 and DEFRAG
who is not having problems and get a copy of theirs. They also think
I may have a virus but the MS-Anti-Virus software says I have none.
Their third possibility is that there may be a hardware problem with
the Vectra. I have run SCANDISK on the hard drive which has found
no problems.

I have several examples now of files which have become corrupted
and I have put a good version and the bad version on the HP3000
and done some analysis. In one case a portion of the EXE was
written in two different places of the file. Another file contained
directory information.

I have a checksum program on the PC which I run against the files
which definitely tells me that they are different.

So, my questions to the group:

1) Does anyone use DEFRAG under DOS 6.22 who has not
     seen a possible corruption problem?

2) Are there any good Anti-Virus programs out there that
     someone could recommend?

3) Is there something flaky about the HP Vectra 486/66N that
I should be aware of? (Why does the hard disk light flash
for a few seconds when I'm not doing anything?)

4) Is there any place else I should be looking?

Thanks for your time. I would really like to solve this problem
so I don't have to keep reloading software on my PC.

I apologize to those people who think that this is a waste of
bandwidth on the HP3000-L.

Thanks,

Ken Paul
