Presumably if you deleted the REPL function (please don't), you would
re-add deblank().
A few years ago, a client implemented repl() with a command file. I know
they had a definite use for it (though I don't recall what).
Bottom line: Please keep repl(), and in its documentation mention that
new_str may be the null string.
