Since ltrim() and rtrim() already exist to remove leading and trailing
blanks, would it make more sense to call this trim() instead of
deblank(), or do you think that would just cause confusion?>>
 
I'd suggest a different name; "trim" implies "cut something off of one
end", which is quite a bit different from "suck out all the spaces".
