Another one for the standards committees - every operating system ought to
have an 'encapsulation' feature which allows any type of file to be packaged
as a raw bit stream, with a standardized header identifying source OS,
version number, original file name and type, followed by the OS-specific
file labels/contents/etc. If transferred to the same OS the file can then
be unpackaged completely intact. If transferred to a different OS then at
least the OS manufacturer has the option of detecting and supporting the
'foreign' file type to whatever degree he sees fit.
