For what it's worth, it was one of the more difficult broadcasts to produce.
Performance management is an area that gets *very* technical very quickly. And
there's no way that I can teach anybody to be a performance specialist in three
hours (not to mention the fact that we were also supposed to cover high
availability including the Quest/HP SharePlex agreement in the same timeframe).
Couple this with the fact that the TCU audience has a very diverse set of
requirements and expectations, and you have an almost impossible training task
at hand. In the same "virtual classroom", I've got system managers who have
Glance on their system and have absolutely no idea what any of the displays
mean - and are literally starting from scratch - and they are sitting next to
people with 10 years of performance analysis background on MPE/V, MPE XL and
UNIX machines.

This is the problem we've faced, to a greater or lesser extent, in putting each
and every TCU program together. I can only see one approach that has a prayer
of working. In the TV show, we shoot high - we cover the basic concepts,
particularly things that are best explained through the use of moving pictures,
sand toys and Lego(tm) blocks. (And if you didn't see the broadcast, you'll
just have to watch the videotape if you want to know what I mean by that last
remark... :) Then, for people who are loking for a more in depth
treatment of the topics at hand, we package details in the workbook. The book
for the latest program is made up of two parts - the first part follows the
storyboards of the broadcast - and the second part (consisting of more than
half of the total number of pages) is made up of more technical papers on the
subject at hand. By organizing things in this way, we hopefully will be able
to satisfy the requirements of both audiences as best as we can...

Now, apparently, you haven't gotten through the workbook just yet:
: Mind you, I haven't
: had much time to dig into the workbook. There are suppose to be some
: good tidbits for performance management there.

I hope you find what you're looking for there. This time around, we made a
special effort to put as much content as possible into the workbook.

A) Performance Basics - (which was lifted from an old training course
for SEs called SE381. I'm planning to leverage more of this old
training material into future articles and broadcasts).
B) The HP 3000 Workload Manager (which is based on the article that
Susan Campbell and I wrote for Interact earlier this year).
C) SharePlex/iX-Netbase Overview (a paper contributed by Quest)
D) Business Continuity Support (Marketing Information on a support
and consulting package newly available from HP)
E) Managing MPE/3000 System Availability - an Interex Tutorial that
was first presented in 1993, written by Rakesh Patel, and including
information on Volume Management, disk Arrays, Disk Mirroring, SPU
Switchover, TurboSTORE, and Autorestart. It was updated to include
information on Threshold Manager, SharePlex and Opeview System manager.
Over 50 pages long, this is a very comprehensive treatment of the
subject. This appendix also includes Dave Beasley's article
"Configuring Your Disks for High Availability", published in 1992.
F) Technical Datasheets for a number of HP High Availability Products.

: Again, judging strictly on the broadcast, the info seemed pretty routine.
: Since you are fairly experienced on the HP, I doubt you will learn more
: than a nuggets worth of info.

Once again, we are targeting the TV broadcast toward people without a great
deal of technical knowledge. Based on the data we're getting from the
evaluations, I think we're hitting the nail pretty squarely on the head:
Here's an example from the Evaluation Results. The first question was:
This hour of the program was worth my time:

                                Hour1 Hour2 Hour3
a) Strongly Agree 29% 14% 39%
b) Agree 62% 69% 48%
c) No opinion 5% 12% 12%
d) Disagree 3% 5% 1.7%
e) Disagree Strongly 1% 0% 0%

While I'm on the subject of workbooks, I know I promised to upload the workbook
from the January broadcast and make it available to folks on the net
electronically. I apologize that I haven't gotten around to doing that yet.
And I also wanted to mention that I literally *can't* do that with the April
Workbook because I received much of the information on paper - I literally
don't have the bits. If you want the workbook, the best I can suggest is that
you call the 800 number or use the faxback form to order the tapes. (See the
form at the end of this message).

Finally, the demand for the tapes has been astronomical. And while our tapes
aren't quite as popular as "The Lion King", it's worth noting that we do not
have Disney's distribution mechanism either. I can only apologize for the
long delays in getting orders turned around, but just to give you an example of
what we're facing, the people who answer the calls tell me that last week alone
they received over 100 orders for the "Betting Your Business" video - (the tape
that we're using to articulate the MPE-vs-UNIX positioning). Remember, this is
on top of the regular order traffic for the broadcasts, which can run into the
throusands. Each program has proved to be more popular than the one before.
