OK, a little reading in the C.50.00 Communicator leads me to change c89.ccg
to link in LIBCSHR.LIB.SYS, LIBCANSI.LIB.SYS
*****
$ ECHO=1 c89 -s -o hellos hello.c
callci(file cctext=./hello.c)->'2'
callci(file ccobj=./hello.o)->'2'
callci(file cclist=$null)->'2'
callci(xeq ccomxl.pub.sys;info="-Ap ";parm=7)->'2'
callci(reset cctext)->'2'
callci(reset ccobj)->'2'
callci(reset cclist)->'2'
CONTENTS OF LINKEDIT INDIRECT FILE:
./hello.o
/SYS/LIB/LIBCANSI
/SYS/LIB/LIBCSHR
END OF INDIRECT FILE
callci(xeq linkedit.pub.sys "link;nodebug;from=^/tmp/c890039002F.aaa;to=./hellos
;posix;share;cap=ph";parm=7)->'2'
$ ls -l hellos
-rwxrwx--- 1 TELALERT.TELAMON TELAMON 26624 Mar 21 18:24 hellos

Well now I'm cooking! 107776 -> 40704 -> 26624 bytes for Hello World.
(HP-UX version is 12288.) But, question remains, what's the difference
between the three programs?
Thanks,
