Technology CloseUp: Managing System Performance & Availability
                           Wednesday, April 19, 1995
 =========================================================================
ANNOUNCING: This is to announce the fourth broadcast in HP's popular
Technology Closeup series of interactive television broadcasts.
This series of programs is available to all HP 3000 customers
at no charge, with videotapes to be made available through the
Customer Connection Hotline. As always, your host will be George
Stachnik, the HP 3000 Product Champion from HP.

DESCRIPTION: This Technology CloseUp will be focused primarily on
High Availability on the HP 3000, with an additional
discussion on managing system performance. The
program will walk you through a story about a customer
experiencing the need for managing performance (using
Glance, Workload Manager & analysing disc arrangements)
growing into the need for a system that is higher in
availability. We will walk through growing from a basic
system to a high availability system then completing
with a disaster tolerant SharePlex/iX complete solution.
The high availability complete solution covers periph-
              erals, performance, processes and products.

This will be a three hour broadcast. In the first hour we'll
begin by examining the performance issues that sometimes arise on
large HP 3000 systems, particularly on systems that have
undergone a major consolidation. We'll see how to use
performance tools such as Glance and Laser RX to diagnose
some of these problems. You'll learn how to determine if a
performance problem is being caused by an overall shortage of
resources, by a particular component of the system (such as a
disk array), or by a particular application (even a client/server
application). We'll also look at ways to use tools such as HP's
Workload Manager to manage your way around some of these
              situations.

In the second hour we'll focus on the high availability issues
that sometimes arise on large or consolidated HP 3000 systems.
We'll review some of the system management "best practices", such
as the use of user volume sets, and examine step by step
procedures for migrating to user volume sets. We'll also begin
to explore some of the high availability products that are
available for the HP 3000, including RAID disks, mirrored disks
and a number of others, with a special emphasis on understanding
when each of these products makes economic sense.

Finally, in the third hour we'll see how HP 3000s can be used in
a disaster tolerant environment. We'll see how solutions such as
SharePlex can be used to recover from disasters that can
potentially result in the destruction of the physical datacenter.
