As Craig says, the SCSI2SD is bootable.

When I set mine up, I was moving from an existing spinning-disk install so
I did a sysgen with [log in to unmask]@.@ (or to that effect, I’d have to go look at
my notes to remember exactly, but it’s basically just a full system
backup). I left drive models alone and just set the SCSI2SD vendor to
“HP”. I can find some MAPPER output to show you what I have.

From there, I booted off of the sysgen tape and restored to the SCSI2SD
volume. I also set up a roughly 12GB volume as additional storage, but I
don’t remember many details from that. I might be able to dig some up if
it’s important. In essence you can create volumes of the size you desire
and use them just like regular SCSI disks on the 3000.

I’ve never tried multiple SCSI2SDs to accomplish actual multi-device RAID;
in principle I suppose there’s no reason it wouldn’t work, if you set
termination and so forth appropriately so both devices can be seen on the
bus (I think by default termination is enabled on the SCSI2SD). For my
purposes, my MPE/iX install changes slowly enough that I’m comfortable with
a once-every-few-weeks shutdown and backup of the SD card.

I’ll send the MAPPER output shortly, assuming I can find it.
