Whether for good or ill, the “.iso” extension has never actually implied the presence of an ISO-9660 filesystem on a volume; it’s been the extension used for raw sector images of CDs since around when ISO-9660 was introduced, and I believe someone conflated them way back then.
Relatively few files with a “.iso” extension in the wild will actually contain an ISO-9660 filesystem. Some, however, will have LIF. :)
