Your impression might be wrong.
I believe you need a SLT, System Load Tape.
I just went through something similar.

Hello,
I've acquired an HP e3000 918LX and am curious about how to
actually get MPE/iX onto the thing. I have some CD-ROM media of 7.5, but
I'm unable to boot it as I get "bad LIF magic". I have no tape media for
the thing, but I'm under the impression that a fresh install from CD-ROM
should be possible.
I have:
30216-11134_MPEiX7.5_FOS-SUBSYS_Vol1.iso
30216-11135_MPEiX7.5_FOS-SUBSYS_Vol2.iso
Thanks much.
