I believe shut 5 gets you to mirror s/w drives are synced upped.  Without shut 5 the drive would all try to sync up, 5 at a time when system was up and running

I think SHUT 4 was completion of disc activity which made it safe.  I 
could be wrong here so feel free to correct me.

Anything after that was gravy.  Just some lost bits that won't get used 
again anyway.
