It depends on how much time you have and how desperate you are to retrieve whats on the drive.
If it is easy to recover, then replace the drive, if you need to do diagnostics, it's gonna take awhile with no promises.

Thanks for that Donna. I have downloaded the std and will try to get it over
to the HP3000 as soon as I have a minute. I currently have a HDD that needs
replacing.
On the matter of the HDD. When I do a DSTAT ALL I see this:
LDEV-TYPE STATUS VOLUME VOLUME SET - GEN
---------- ------- ----------------------------------
1-ST318417N MASTER MEMBER1 MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET-0
2-ST318417N MASTER MEMBER1 HAL_DATA-0
This is what the system should look like:
:DSTAT ALL
LDEV-TYPE STATUS VOLUME VOLUME SET - GEN
---------- ------- ----------------------------------
1-ST318417N MASTER MEMBER1 MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET-0
2-ST318417N MASTER MIDATA00 HAL_DATA-0
3-ST318417N MASTER MEMBER1 HAL_BKUP-0
This tells me that LDEV3 was not found during the system start norecovery. Is
there anything else I can do to see if the drive can be found and recovered; or
do I just pull it and install the spare?
