Uh...that would be AllegrO ;-)
If you don't have our "bigdirs" program installed (or if you have an old
version), I strongly suggest you visit our website (
https://www.allegro.com/?page_id=77) and download/install a copy -- and run
it often. Daily, if your application(s) are really dynamic, or weekly.
If this "how many files can I have in a group (or directory)" is news to
you, then please read Allegro's whitepaper on MPE filesystem limitations (
https://www.allegro.com/?page_id=79)...and then go get "bigdirs".
"bigdirs" has special code in it for purging files from overly large
groups/directories. DO NOT attempt to purge files from bloated groups
without assistance!!

It doesn't matter if a disc volume has one or more drives in it.
Ultimately, it is the filesystem that dictates the *count* of files in a
group or directory. If you truly need to keep tens-of-thousands of files,
then they need to be spread across groups or directories. Let the
filesystem help you.
