Thanks for the reply, not a lot of socketed chips , other than the 3 that make up the cpu. All edge connectors and sockets have been cleaned on the backplane and jumpers. Regarding running the diagnostic from the terminal, i do have tapes ,but as stated before drives need to have the capstain redone plus the tapes are probably kaput.  I can run the cpuself test from the bic board which seem to be the same as from the console just more interactive ,I believe the code still comes from the rom. I don't know if this would work but I know the tape images are on the simh mpe drive image , could they be extracted and loaded with the binary loader on the terminal ,like the games that can be loaded? I guess I just need to systematically check all the logic on the cpu and bic board, is it also possible a rom has gone bad .or worse the rass chip is faulty although it is runningJust trying to find the best way to start tackling this. Thanks for the input.GrantSent from my Galaxy

Back in 1980 you would run the CLST (cold load self test) on an unbootable system. The CLST ran from the system console and was loaded from a cartridge tape in theconsole terminal. The console was a customized version of the 2649 terminal. Ifyou have a working console the capstans in the cart tape drives have turned tochewing gum and will destroy the CLST tape. Those systems did have some trouble from tarnished dip socket contacts. Reseatingchips might help.Bob J. -- Ideal Computer Services> On January 11, 2021 11:28 PM grant <[log in to unmask]> wrote:> >  > External Email> Hello, I was referred here from VintHPcom at groups.io , I am trying to restore a series 30 and am hoping to get some insight, on repairing this unit. I have repaired the power supply and all is within spec. But now I need to find the fault keeping it from running. Ideally finding a spare set of boards would be the best but ,most likely this will be a long shot. I have the schematic, ce and diagnostic manuals and understand this is where the experts can be found.> > I can give a little description of what it can do.> On power up run light is on and stays on (I believe it should halt) it my understanding that when it is halted the cpu self test can be run .> If halt is pressed the light comes on but it is not halted. I found by pressing dump . It will start to handshake to the drive but freezes and the halt light will light. It is now halted and I can run the cpuself test which fails on test 23(230) Rass register test. This is near the end of the rass tests.> The manuals solution is to replace the cpu board, then replace the bic board and lastly reseat the rass.> I am hoping the rass is not gone and it is some failed logic.> Any help for a good starting point would be appreciated, or just a extra mind or 2 to pinpoint a starting point.> > Thanks,> > Grant> > http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/hp/3000/schems/30070-90009_S33_schem_Jan79.pdf> > http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/hp/3000/diagnostics/30070-90044_HPIB_Diags_Vol1.pdf> > http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/hp/3000/ce_handbooks/30070-90010_HPIBsysCE_May87.pdf> > > Sent from my Galaxy> > This message is not from a UTC.EDU address.
